Communication
Open communication on health and safety issues is encouraged at OHS to foster an injury-free and productive work environment.
- Employees voicing health and safety concerns will not face retaliation.
- Human Resources will review health and safety comments, initiating investigations into reported and potential hazards.
- Employees are urged to inform supervisors or Human Resources of any perceived workplace hazards.
- Communication can be written or oral and may be anonymous if desired.
Employee Responsibilities
Board Members and Executives/Employers
- Responsible for developing an effective strategy for managing occupational health and safety concerns.
- Ensure proper allocation of resources and governance to meet health and safety requirements.
- Foster a workplace culture of safety with appropriate leadership.
- Review policies annually, revising as necessary.
- Provide the committee with copies of orders or reports from Ministry of Labour Inspectors regarding work-related incidents.
Managers
- Assist in developing, implementing, and enforcing OHS policies and procedures.
- Promote health and safety awareness through instruction, information, training, and supervision.
- Utilize hazard identification, risk management, and incident investigation processes.
- Perform occupational health and safety inspections to identify and control hazards.
- Accountable for the health and safety of workers under their supervision.
- Ensure machinery and equipment safety and employee compliance with established safe work practices.
- Conduct health and safety meetings.
Human Resources
- Liaise with government agencies for workplace health and safety compliance.
- Act as an advisor to management on safety and health policy issues.
- Coordinate health and safety inspections and follow up on corrective actions.
- Develop Best Practices.
- Design and develop accident/incident reports and investigation procedures.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of health and safety regulations.
- Design and develop company policies and procedures on workplace safety and health.
- Review injury and illness trends, identifying problems and solutions.
Employees
- Responsible for compliance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
- Notify managers of any health and safety concerns for prompt resolution.
- Protect personal health and safety by working in compliance with laws and established procedures.
- Use required personal protective equipment.
- Report unsafe conditions to managers or Human Resources without fear of reprisal.
All Staff Responsibilities
- Complete required occupational health and safety training.
- Perform duties in a manner conducive to a safe workplace, following safety practices and procedures.
- Report incidents, injuries, or hazards as outlined in procedures.
- Report acts of violence or harassment.
- Promote a hazard-free workplace.
- Learn and follow the Emergency Plan for fire, weather, or medical emergencies.
